"To err is human. To insist is diabolical." The Swiss are not allowed to err and so they fail in humanity. The Italians have tried to imitate the Swiss but making a mess of things, they've become diabolical. The Irish weren't taken in. They learned to get things wrong in the right way.

20.

Some countries are well organised but lack vitality. Others are lively but are poorly organised. Learning organisation from Switzerland can be taken for granted, just as learning the joy of life and of being together from Ireland, Spain and the Basque country can be taken for granted. Italy's originality of late has been to learn the joy of life from the Swiss and organisation from the so-called third world countries.

In Ireland there is singing and dancing at funerals, and one can express grief in this way; notwithstanding death, life which continues, is celebrated. And so, the funerals becomes almost a party. In Florence today, there is no dancing or singing together at weddings, but to compensate, the Florentines take a lot of photographs and they even film (often splashing out on professional service) the nothingness, the death which, notwithstanding life, goes on And so, instead of turning the funeral in a party, they make a party in a funeral.

22.

The Irish are a people of the extreme south who live in the extreme north.

23.

No-one can explain how it is that the Irish and Scots have always been so out of step in dress. During the Roman period when everybody wore skirts (tunics) they wore britches and later, when all Europe wore trousers, they wore skirts (kilts).

24.

If you want to know what the music and traditions of Ireland were like a thousand years ago, you'll find them in Scotland.

25.
The Basque people belong in part to Celtic culture, and the Irish belong in part to the Basque country.

26.

Europe is an old civilisation, and the old sometimes have problems remembering things, but if some day the Europeans find a cure for arteriosclerosis, and they remember their "glorious past", then they won't speak so badly of Basque and Irish terrorists and might even be proud (!) of them, thinking: in this countries, where the people are dedicated to such uncivilised and un-European things as singing together, playing and dancing, drinking and having a good time, you can find someone at least who behaves the "good old European way"...
